Practical information

Hotels

Rooms are booked directly with the hotel.

The recommended hotels for the conference are:

  • Quality Hotel Panorama (address Eklandagatan 51-53 in Gothenburg, tel +46 31 767 7011, fax +46 31 767 7071 and email reservation.panorama@quality.choicehotels.se).
  • Hotel Ljungbacken, (address Ljungbacken 6 in Gothenburg, tel +46 31 16 79 90, fax +46 31 18 16 75 and email hotel.ljungbacken@hotelljungbacken.se).

These hotels are within walking distance from Chalmers. Reference should be made to "CHALM/CM2003" when booking.

Rooms at the recommended hotels were reserved until the 11th of March. From what I've heard, the recommended hotels may be sold out during the conference. To find other hotels, you can search at Göteborg's tourist site www.goteborg.com. Select the language of your choice (flags in the top left) and then Accomodation in the list to the left.

Another possibility is to contact a booking agency. One can be found at www.activbokning.se, where you have phone, fax and E-mail to the agency.

Weather

Typical weather in Gothenburg during mid June:

  • Average temperature (during 24 hours): 14.8° C
  • Typical daytime temperature: 20-25°C (however, it may be as low as 10°C in extreme cases)
  • Sun rises at 4.30 and sets at 22.00
  • Water temperature about 20°C

What to wear?

  • Expect everything from rain to clear, warm, sunny days. It can get windy and rainy at the same time, so a water-proof jacket is often better than an umbrella
  • The nights can be rather chilly, so bring some warm jacket (typically a fleece jacket will keep you warm and keep the wind out).
  • Bring your swimming suit. If you have spare time, the coast and the lakes east of the city can offer nice beaches with much warmer water than you would expect at this latitude (due to the Gulf stream).

To the conference banquet, we recommend that you bring warm clothes since the night may be chilly. Further, walking shoes are recommended since we will walk on cobble-stone to the Carlsten fortress.

Map of Gothenburg

A map of Gothenburg (Göteborg), may be found at the Swedish yellow pages. Choose maps and road description. To find your hotel, type hotel's address. A complication is that you have to type Göteborg in the City field, which may be a problem on some keyboards. On a UK keyboard, pressing the 'ALT' key and typing in 148 on the numerical pad (to the right of the keyboard) will give 'ö' (thanks to Dr John Garnham for the tip!).

To get a travel description (unfortunately in Swedish, but with the knowledge that "vänster" is left and "höger" is rigth, it should be readable) to Chalmers from your hotel, press "Find it" above the map and give the arrival address as Sven Hultins Gata 2. Note that the travel description is designed for car travel.

Tourist information

Gothenburg

Gothenburg, or Göteborg as it's called in Swedish, is the second largest city in Sweden with about half a million citizens. Göteborg gained city priviliegies in 1621 and is situated on the west coast of Sweden. The port is Scandinavia's largest and there are several industries in the city (Volvo, SKF, Hasselblads, ESAB, etc.).

Recreation in Gothenburg

How to get to Gothenburg, Chalmers and to your hotel

Some versions on how to get to Gothenburg:

  • by train
    • To get to Chalmers from the railway station
      • Exit through the main entrance (towards Drottningtorget)
      • Take tram 6, 7, 8 or 10 to Chalmers (current line numbering, may be subjected to changes, so check the schedule at the tram stop)
  • by air
    • A description on how to get from Landvetter airport to Chalmers (passing Panorama hotel) by car (or bus) is available on-line.
  • by boat
    • There are ferries to Gothenburg from varies locations (Fredrikshavn, Kiel, Harwich). Especially if you travel with your family, this may be a cheap way of getting to Gothenburg. The ferries anchor at different locations, please consult your travel agency for details on how to get from the ferry to Chalmers or the hotel.

Both Quality hotel Panorama and Hotell Ljungbacken are within walking distance from Chalmers.

Visa

  • To see if you need a visa, check the on-line list of countries/territories from which citizens require a visa when entering Sweden.
  • A list of your closest Swedish embassy or consulate is also available on-line.
  • General information about how to apply for a visa for visits to Sweden is available from the Swedish migration board. There you can also download application forms, etc.
  • For the visa application, you will need an invitation from the conference. We will send you this invitation letter once we have received your application and payment to the conference. Note that this invitation does not include any economical responsibility on behalf of the conference.
