Scope of the conference

As in previous conferences, the focus will be on the contact between wheel and rail and the phenomena that have their origin in this area. For the CM2003 conference, the theme:

Enhancing safety, environment and economy through research

has been chosen to reflect the important interaction between research and practice.

In addition, the following seven categories of presentations have been selected:

  • Fundamental studies in rail/wheel contact mechanics and stress/strain analysis
  • Damage and failure of rails and wheels - prediction and prevention
  • Rail/wheel friction and wear, including grinding, lubricating and hardening
  • Development of new rail/wheel materials and designs
  • Reducing vibration and noise by controlling contact conditions
  • Measurements and simulations of rail/wheel contact forces
  • Recent incidents and accidents with cracked wheels and rails - case studies

It is the tradition of the conference series to feature presentations by internationally leading researchers and engineers. We wish to uphold this tradition and encourage the participation of rail and transit system staff and of consultants, vendors and engineers, in parallel with researchers.

The official language of the conference is English. All papers are to be written and presented in English.
